Q: The Walk That Made Us Set Up Turtle Mode on Every Build

Updated 4 min read

Quick Answer

Turtle mode (Flip Over After Crash in Betaflight) reverses your motor direction so the drone can flip itself upright after landing upside down. It needs DShot ESC protocol, a dedicated radio switch, and motors that spin freely. Setup takes under a minute on any build with a DShot-capable flight stack.

The Walk That Changed Our Workshop Policy

Last autumn a customer crashed a 5-inch freestyle build into a soggy field near our local flying spot. Landed upside down in a puddle. No turtle mode. He walked 400 metres through ankle-deep mud, flipped it by hand, walked back, and lawn-darted into the same patch ten minutes later. Same walk. Twice.

Three of us watched from the flight line, and every one of us had turtle mode configured. After that we started setting it up on every build that leaves our workshop. It is not optional. It is a 30-second software change that eliminates the most annoying part of FPV: the walk of shame.

Turtle mode works on any build with DShot ESCs and a flight controller running Betaflight 4.x or later. If you have a SpeedyBee F405 V5 stack or similar 30x30 flight stack, you already meet the hardware requirement.

What You Need Before Setup

Two hard requirements. First, DShot ESC protocol. The MicoAir AM32 55A ESC we stock runs DShot600 out of the box. If your ESC is still on Oneshot125 or Multishot, the Flip Over After Crash option will not appear in Betaflight. Time to upgrade.

Second, your motors and props must be intact. Reversing thrust puts unusual load on shafts and bearings. Our workshop rule: if a motor does not spin freely by hand, skip turtle mode and make the walk. We pack ABS 5x3 props in every field kit because they bend rather than shatter on impact, ideal for builds that see regular turtle mode use.

Setting Up Turtle Mode in Betaflight

Open Betaflight Configurator. Confirm your ESC protocol is DShot300 or DShot600 under the Configuration tab. Go to the Modes tab, find "Flip Over After Crash", and assign it to a dedicated two-position AUX switch. Pick one reachable without moving your thumbs off the gimbals.

When activated, your OSD displays an arrow pointing at the ceiling. Push the throttle stick to roll the quad in that direction. Motors reverse and the quad flips upright. Toggle the mode off and re-arm.

The most common mistake we see in our repair queue: turtle mode and arm on the same switch. One customer activated reversed motors at head height. The quad dropped onto concrete. Use a separate switch. Always.

When NOT to Use Turtle Mode

We see more damaged motors from reckless turtle mode use than from the crashes themselves. A motor replacement costs more than a two-minute walk. Skip turtle mode when:

The quad is tangled in grass, brambles, or branches. Props cannot spin freely, and reversing thrust against resistance bends shafts. You crashed into water deeper than the prop line. Water is roughly 800 times denser than air and overloads motors instantly. You heard grinding after impact. That is a bent bell or failed bearing, and flipping turns a repairable motor into scrap.

Our rule: if you cannot see the props clearly from where you are standing, walk.

FAQ

Q: Does turtle mode work with any ESC protocol?

A: No. It requires DShot (DShot150, DShot300, or DShot600). If your ESC runs Oneshot or Multishot, the option will not appear in Betaflight Modes.

Q: Can turtle mode damage my motors?

A: Yes, if used when props are obstructed. Reversing thrust against grass, dirt, or debris stresses bearings and bends shafts. Always check that motors spin freely before activating.

Q: What switch should I assign turtle mode to?

A: A dedicated two-position AUX switch, separate from your arm switch. Pick one you can reach without moving your thumbs off the sticks.

Q: Does it work on toothpick and micro builds?

A: It works on any DShot-equipped build, but builds under 65mm may lack the prop authority to flip. We find 3-inch and above manage fine.

Q: My OSD does not show the flip arrow. What is wrong?

A: Confirm "Flip Over After Crash" is enabled in the OSD tab, your Betaflight version is 4.0 or later, and your switch range in the Modes tab is correct. For setup basics, see our Betaflight flight controller setup guide.

Q: Should I use turtle mode instead of a buzzer?

A: They do different things. A buzzer helps you find a lost quad. Turtle mode flips it over. Set up both. See our buzzer setup guide. If your quad will not arm after a crash, start with the arming troubleshooting guide before attempting turtle mode.
