Carbon, Shells or Both? The AOS HS5 Listing Trap
Share
Quick Answer
Buy the complete AOS HS5 carbon-and-prints kit for a new build. The carbon-only option is incomplete without the shaped shells and fairings, while the prints-only option is a replacement set with no carbon or frame hardware. The HS5 is a specialised speed platform, not a normal five-inch freestyle frame.
Three Listings, Only One Complete Starting Point
The naming looks simpler than the actual buying decision. Our AOS HS5 carbon-and-3D-prints kit contains the carbon structure, aerodynamic spinners, front electronics shell and rear battery shell. We also add the frame, motor and DJI O3/O4 Pro camera mounting hardware listed on the product page. That is the version we would buy for a fresh build.
The carbon-only AOS HS5 supplies the carbon plates and frame hardware, but none of the printed bodywork needed to complete the intended enclosed layout. It makes sense if you already own a sound print set and need replacement carbon. It is a false economy for a first HS5.
The AOS HS5 prints-only set is the opposite: PETG fairings and shells plus TPU parts, but no carbon or frame hardware. We treat it as a repair or O3/O4 Pro conversion pack, not a frame kit. The files are not supplied for home printing, so damaging a shell is a parts-order problem rather than a quick STL reprint.
What the Current HS5 Specification Actually Supports
The current AOS and iFlight specifications describe a 233mm-wheelbase frame weighing 226g, with a 6mm main plate and 2mm top plate. It accepts up to six-inch propellers, although AOS recommends 5.25-inch APC props, and uses 30.5mm flight-controller and VTX mounting. Camera support is 19–20mm, with up to 155° prop-free field of view at a typical high-speed camera angle.
The recommended power system is 2808 1950KV motors on 16mm or 19mm mounting. The current specification allows up to an 1800mAh 6S battery within a 90 × 40 × 55mm envelope. Those figures are compatibility limits, not a promise that any parts inside them will produce the advertised 200mph-plus result.
This distinction matters because drag rises sharply with speed. The shells, motor fairings, prop choice, battery condition and tune work as one system; copying only the motor KV is not copying the aircraft. Our FPV top-speed article explains why a headline speed without the test configuration is weak evidence.
What We Would Actually Buy
For a new aircraft, we would start with the complete kit and a current 6S parts plan. For an existing HS5 with intact printed parts, carbon-only is sensible. For crash damage, or an older shell that does not suit the intended DJI O3/O4 Pro camera, buy prints-only.
Do not choose the HS5 merely because it fits five-inch-class parts. At 226g before electronics, motors and battery, it prioritises low drag and rigidity over light freestyle handling. If that trade-off is wrong for your flying, start with our FPV frame selection guide or browse the wider multirotor frame range.
FAQ
Q: Does the AOS HS5 carbon-only kit make a complete frame?
A: No. It includes carbon and frame hardware, but not the printed aerodynamic shells and fairings.
Q: Are the AOS HS5 STL files included?
A: No. Our current listings state that the print files are not publicly supplied; the prints-only product is the replacement route.
Q: Can the AOS HS5 use DJI O4 Pro?
A: Yes, with the current O3/O4 Pro-compatible printed set. Confirm that an older airframe has the matching shell before ordering only carbon.
