The Name Hides Two Different Signal Paths
Search data shows why this needs spelling out: people reach our shop using “FPV repeater”, “FPV radio repeater” and “Walksnail repeater”, but those phrases describe two architectures. The practical question is not which box has the bigger range claim. It is where the weak part of your link sits.
The FPV Analogue Signal Repeater System is really a remote RF head and ground-station transport. The receiver and, on the 5.8GHz/868MHz version, the ELRS transmitter hardware can sit on a tripod where the radio path is clear. Up to 300m of Cat5 then carries signals between that position and the operator. The alternative 1.2GHz-video version does not include an ELRS transmitter.
That distinction matters. It does not magically bend radio around terrain; it lets you place the receiving and transmitting equipment where the path is better without forcing the pilot to stand beside it. Our listed unit takes 10–35V through XT60, uses SMA-F RF ports and measures 240 × 170 × 110mm. It is field equipment, not something we would hang from a lightweight tripod without checking the mount.
What the Walksnail Repeater Actually Repeats
The Walksnail Avatar Repeater is a wireless digital-video relay for the Avatar HD system. It communicates with the aircraft VTX in the 5.8GHz range and with the ground-side VRX or compatible goggles in the 5.2GHz range. The directional 7dBi LHCP antennas therefore have jobs at opposite ends: point the 5.8GHz side towards the aircraft and the 5.2GHz side towards the ground receiver.
Caddx specifies a 9–26V input, 119.5 × 72 × 18.6mm body and 145.9g weight without antennas. It supports the listed Avatar transmission modes up to 1080p at 100fps and works with Goggles X, Avatar VRX and Avatar VTX units. It has no HDMI output or DVR, so do not buy it as a standalone receiver or recorder.
Which One We Would Choose
For an analogue deployment where the pilot must be separated from the best antenna position, we would choose the cabled ground station. Check the selected video/control configuration, video-lead pinout and the required greater-than-60cm vertical separation between transmitting and receiving antennas before deployment.
For Avatar HD, choose Walksnail’s relay and treat antenna aim as part of the setup. Do not mix 5.2GHz and 5.8GHz antenna roles. Neither product changes UK flight rules. When flying FPV, the CAA requires an observer who keeps the aircraft in direct sight and watches the surrounding airspace. Better radio placement is not permission for BVLOS flight, and every transmitter must remain within the applicable Ofcom conditions.
