That PX4 Setup Guide? Here’s The Short Version.

We wrote a rather comprehensive guide on setting up PX4. It’s brilliant, if you have an afternoon to spare and a fresh pot of tea. For everyone else, here's the bit you actually need to avoid turning your drone into an expensive, non-flying paperweight. First, install QGroundControl. Don't argue, just do it. Then, follow the wiring diagram for your flight controller. PX4 expects things to be in certain places, and it's not a fan of creative interpretation. Get it right now, or spend hours troubleshooting later. Your call.

With the physical stuff sorted, it’s time for the rituals. Calibrate your sensors. Yes, this includes the awkward compass dance you must perform outdoors, far from any metal that might offend the magnetic spirits. Then, set up your radio, flight modes, and failsafes. While you're there, configure two switches: one to arm the drone, and a second, non-negotiable kill switch. Think of it as your get-out-of-jail-free card for when a test hover decides to become an unscheduled tree inspection.

Finally, tell PX4 about your motors. Set the ESC protocol to DShot 300, map their positions, and make sure they spin the right way—props off, obviously. Correct motor geometry is the difference between a stable hover and a drone that thinks it's a blender. If this all sounds suspiciously simple, it is. The devil, as they say, is in the details. For a full sermon on every single setting, you can find the original, unabridged guide here.
