PDRA01 or UK SORA: Deciding Which Piece of Paper You Need
Share
So, you’ve decided that merely flying a drone as a hobby isn’t quite complex enough. Excellent. Now you get to navigate the CAA's regulatory maze. Your rewarding prize? Legal permission to operate in the Specific Category, choosing between two pathways with catchy names: PDRA01 and UK SORA. One is essentially a slightly less painful template, while the other is a lengthy exercise in bureaucratic risk assessment. Choose wisely, because picking the wrong one is a fantastic way to light both time and money on fire, two things we assume you actually care about.

PDRA01 is the standard pathway. If your drone is under 25kg, you only fly by keeping eyes on it (VLOS), you don't fancy flying directly over crowds, and you don't need to exceed 120m (400ft), this is your lane. It’s pre-defined, standardized, and generally faster and cheaper to apply for. Think of it as ordering from the fixed-price menu; your choices are limited, but at least you know what you’re getting and you won't still be waiting for your starter in three months' time.
Then there’s UK SORA, or the 'Specific Operations Risk Assessment'. This is the pathway for those whose operations are actually interesting, or at least complicated. You’ll need this if you want to fly BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight), operate drones over 25kg, drop payloads, fly over crowds, or generally do anything the CAA deems risky. This is the custom order. You get more flexibility, but you must prove, in excruciating detail, how you aren’t going to crash. It takes longer, costs more, and requires you to actually use your brain. Shocking, we know.
If you're still confused—and we wouldn't blame you—ask yourself this: do you need BVLOS, to fly over crowds, or a massive drone? If the answer is yes, congrats, you need SORA. If it's no, and you're just doing standard commercial work like inspections or photography, stick to PDRA01. Your wallet and sanity will thank you.
