The SparkFun FTDI Basic Breakout – 5V is the go-to solution for seamless USB to serial communication. This compact breakout board features the FTDI FT232RL USB to serial IC, designed to interface easily with both official and cloned 5V Arduino boards. The board’s pinout mirrors the FTDI cable, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of Arduino boards and general serial applications.

One of the standout features is the DTR pin, which replaces the RTS pin found on traditional FTDI cables. This makes uploading your latest Arduino sketches a breeze, as it automatically resets your Arduino without the need to manually press the reset button. Think of it as the fast-forward button for your development workflow.

Equipped with TX and RX LEDs, you can visibly monitor data traffic, making debugging more straightforward. The FTDI Basic Breakout also has a convenient jumper that allows you to switch between 3.3V and 5V output, with the board set to 5V by default. If you need to switch to 3.3V, just modify the jumper trace with a simple solder.
