One XIAO Antenna Reaches 5GHz. The Other Is Board-Specific
Share
Quick Answer
Buy the antenna for the board, not the larger gain number. The XIAO FPC Antenna A-01 is the 2.4/5GHz part for XIAO ESP32-C3 and C5; the A-02 is the 2.4GHz part for ESP32-S3 and S3 Sense. They are not generic upgrades for every XIAO.
The Model Number Matters More Than the Gain
These two black FPC strips look interchangeable in a parts drawer, but their current catalogue specifications describe different RF jobs. A-01 covers 2400–2500MHz and 5100–5900MHz, with up to 2.80dBi peak gain. A-02 covers 2400–2500MHz only, with up to 1.16dBi peak gain.
| Model | Listed board family | Frequency coverage | Peak gain | Maximum VSWR |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A-01 | XIAO ESP32-C3 / C5 | 2.4GHz and 5GHz | 2.80dBi | 3:1 |
| A-02 | XIAO ESP32-S3 / S3 Sense | 2.4GHz | 1.16dBi | 4.5:1 |
The easy mistake is reading 2.80dBi and treating A-01 as the universal “better” antenna. We would not do that. The XIAO ESP32-C3 itself uses 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, while the C5 can use dual-band Wi-Fi; the antenna’s 5GHz coverage does not add a 5GHz radio to a C3. Start with Seeed’s named compatibility, then choose the radio band your board actually supports.
Fit the Connector Without Turning a Cheap Part Into a Repair
Both products use a tiny snap-on RF connection, not a plug that should be dragged into place by its coax. Seeed’s ESP32-S3 instructions say to engage one side of the antenna connector first, then press the other side down gently. For removal, lift from one side of the connector rather than pulling the cable.
Route the coax without a sharp fold and keep the radiating FPC section away from metal and large ground planes. An adhesive-backed antenna hidden flat against conductive hardware can perform worse than a lower-gain antenna given sensible clearance. Do not use the peak-gain figure as a range promise: enclosure material, orientation, access-point position and local interference all change the result.
What We Would Actually Buy
For an ESP32-S3 or S3 Sense sensor, camera or wearable, we would buy A-02 and stop comparing headline gain. For a C5 project that must use 5GHz Wi-Fi, A-01 is the clear choice. For a C3, A-01 is still the listed matching part, but only its 2.4GHz coverage is useful to that board.
If the board is not one of those named families, check its schematic, radio bands and connector before ordering. Our XIAO family explainer covers why identical footprints do not mean identical processors or radios, while the RP2040 Plus versus SAMD21 Plus comparison is a reminder that some XIAO boards have no Wi-Fi radio at all. FAQ
Q: Can I use A-01 on a XIAO ESP32-S3?
A: We would use A-02. It is the manufacturer-listed FPC antenna for ESP32-S3 and S3 Sense, whereas A-01 is listed for ESP32-C3 and C5.
Q: Does A-01 give an ESP32-C3 5GHz Wi-Fi?
A: No. An antenna cannot add a missing radio band. A-01 covers 5GHz for compatible hardware such as the C5, but the C3 remains a 2.4GHz device.
Q: Is higher dBi always better inside an enclosure?
A: No. Gain describes directionality, not guaranteed range. Poor placement beside metal or a battery can erase the apparent advantage, so board match and installation come first.
