The Lineup Problem Nobody Explains

DJI currently sells two O4 Air Units alongside the older O3, and the naming is genuinely confusing. The O4 Pro Air Unit and O4 Air Unit (Lite) are different cameras, different sensors, and different weights — not just a firmware variation. We stock both because they serve different builds, and we get asked which one to buy more often than any other DJI question.

The O4 Pro is what most pilots want. It has a larger 1/1.3-inch sensor (compared to the O3's 1/1.7-inch), records 4K at up to 120fps with D-Log M support, and transmits 1080p at 60Mbps to DJI Goggles 3 or Goggles N3. In Race Mode, latency drops to 15ms with Goggles 3 — fast enough for competitive racing. At 32g including the camera module, it is 7g lighter than the O3 it replaces.

The O4 Lite is a different animal entirely. At 8.2g, it is designed for sub-100g builds where every gram matters — micro cinewhoops, tiny whoops, and lightweight 2-inch builds. It uses a 1/2-inch sensor and records 4K/60fps, with 20ms latency in Race Mode. You cannot swap the O4 Lite camera onto the O4 Pro body or vice versa; the two share a MIPI connector but DJI locks them out.

Our Honest Take

For a 5-inch freestyle or cinewhoop build, we would go straight to the O4 Pro. The image quality genuinely rivals a GoPro in most conditions, and at 32g it eliminates the weight penalty that made the O3 awkward on lighter builds. The larger sensor delivers noticeably better dynamic range in mixed lighting — something you see immediately when flying through shadow into sun.

For micro builds under 2-inch or sub-100g cinewhoops, the O4 Lite is the right call. We have seen builders try to squeeze the O4 Pro onto 75mm whoops and the weight destroys the flight characteristics. The Lite at 8.2g is the difference between a flyable micro and a brick.

The O3 we would only buy secondhand. It is still a capable system — 4K/120fps, solid range, proven reliability — but it is heavier, has a smaller sensor, and costs about the same as the O4 Pro when bought new. There is no compelling reason to choose it over the O4 Pro unless you already own DJI Goggles 2 or Integra and want to stay on the 50Mbps pipeline without upgrading goggles.

Goggles and Remote Compatibility

This is where most buyers make a costly mistake. The O4 Pro and Lite work with Goggles 3, N3, Goggles 2, and Integra — but Race Mode (the 15ms low-latency mode) only works with Goggles 3 and N3. Goggles 2 and Integra are limited to 50Mbps and standard latency. If you are buying a new system from scratch, pair the O4 Pro with Goggles 3 for full functionality.

CE Mode and the UK Power Problem

One thing UK pilots need to know: in CE mode (Europe), the O4 Pro is limited to 25mW on the 5.8GHz band. DJI added a 5.2GHz band at up to 100mW in Auto mode, but only if you leave the channel selection on Auto — manually selecting 100mW reverts to 25mW. What We Would Actually Buy

For most pilots building a 5-inch or larger drone: the O4 Pro with Goggles 3. It is the complete package — image quality that replaces a GoPro, low enough latency for racing, and proven DJI reliability.

For micro whoop builders: the O4 Lite. Nothing else at 8.2g comes close.

For existing O3 owners: keep flying it. The O4 Pro is better but not £200-£300 better if your O3 still works. Put that money into better goggles instead.
